Custom Keycap Orders: Printing, Shine-Through, and Kit Coverage

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.

To order custom keycaps for mechanical keyboard projects, choose the order format first, match every ordered key to your board, and prepare artwork in the selected maker’s template. Approve the physical key list and design together before paying. For shine-through legends, confirm the exact backlit product and artwork treatment with the maker.

This guide is for buyers preparing personalized keycaps, from a few printed accents to a full custom backlit set. It covers artwork, kit coverage, and order approval. Material rankings and keyboard performance comparisons require separate decisions.

Quick ordering checklist

  • Choose a full set, a small accent order, or another explicitly confirmed format.
  • Verify each key’s position, profile, width, mount, and stabilized-key geometry.
  • Match the template to the product, layout, bottom row, and print location.
  • Resolve artwork rights, production questions, and custom-order terms before approval.

Editorial method: Research-based guidance using manufacturer information captured October 15, 2026. No hands-on fit, printing, or lighting tests were performed. The Tech Toppers example is supported by a captured search excerpt.

Choose your custom keycap order

For ordering purposes, separate three decisions: how many keys you want, whose artwork will appear on them, and whether the legends must transmit backlighting. Describe all three in your inquiry. Treat a preset theme, uploaded personalization, and a backlit legend design as separate requirements for the maker to confirm. Use the backlit-keycap lighting guide to specify where light should be visible.

Two documented examples illustrate why the exact listing matters:

Choose the MAX example as a starting point when you want an ANSI 104-key backlit legend order and its documented black ABS, OEM-profile specification suits your project. That is a specification-based selection, with fit still requiring confirmation. The listing markets the set for Cherry MX; it does not establish compatibility with every keyboard described as MX, magnetic, optical, or low-profile. MAX product details

Consider the Tech Toppers example when your project is specifically a four-key WASD personalization order. Here, WASD identifies the key group on a Tech Toppers listing; the seller is not the WASD Keyboards company. Its captured excerpt supports the four-key format and dye-sublimation process, but does not establish a shine-through result, exact dimensions, or US fulfillment. Tech Toppers WASD listing

If you want only one accent key or a preset themed set, ask for that exact package. Neither documented example establishes a single-key ordering service or a broader catalog recommendation.

Check kit coverage key by key

Approve a key manifest alongside the artwork. A key manifest is your list of every key being ordered, its physical requirements, and its assigned design. Use the exact keyboard model and layout revision as the starting point, then obtain the missing specifications from the keyboard manufacturer or selected keycap maker.

MAX’s product asks buyers to choose a 6.0x, 6.25x, or 6.5x spacebar bottom-row layout. These are alternatives within the order. The listing does not say that selecting the set supplies all three bottom rows, and it instructs buyers to make the configuration selections match the design. The wire keycap puller is also an optional extra. MAX configuration instructions

A practical key-approval worksheet

Copy this worksheet into your order notes. Use the listed positions only when they belong in your order, and add one row for every other key. Blank cells mean unknown information awaiting confirmation, rather than assumed compatibility.

For each row, record the quantity, physical position, required row height or profile, and width in the maker’s stated units. Record the switch mount and, where applicable, the stabilizer attachment arrangement. Ask the maker to confirm clearance for your exact board and switch configuration. Attach the corresponding artwork file or identify its location in the full-set design.

The product description and template index do not supply the complete per-key drawings needed to certify your board’s fit. Keep unresolved measurements blank and send the manifest to the maker for confirmation before payment. MAX product specification · MAX template index

Worked example: matching a selected bottom row

Suppose your board documentation identifies a 6.25x spacebar row and you are considering MAX’s ANSI 104-key top-print backlit product. Select that bottom-row option, then identify the corresponding 104-key ANSI 6.25 top-print template in the backlight section. Have the maker confirm the surrounding bottom-row keys and stabilized-key geometry against your manifest before approving the order. Product options · Template choices The spacebar kit coverage guide helps document the spacebar arrangement alongside the artwork.

That workflow links the physical selection to the artwork selection. A matching spacebar label alone leaves the rest of the manifest unresolved.

Prepare custom print keycap artwork

For uploaded artwork, MAX requires its own print template and accepts Illustrator AI or Inkscape SVG files. Its product page also warns that the comment box cannot accommodate every request and asks customers to inquire beforehand. Send unusual requirements to the maker before relying on an order comment. MAX artwork requirements

MAX’s download index separates backlight templates from color templates. It lists backlight top-print choices for ANSI 61-, 87-, and 104-key layouts and ISO 62-, 88-, and 105-key layouts, with separate bottom-row choices. Certain color side-print templates appear separately. These are template listings; they do not establish that every associated configuration is currently orderable. MAX downloads

Before editing, ask the maker to identify the correct file for your selected product. Confirm the template family, ANSI or ISO layout, key count, bottom row, and top or side printing. The template files themselves were not examined for this guide, so printable boundaries and physical dimensions remain order-specific checks.

Ask for production limits before finishing the design

Send these questions with an early artwork preview:

  • Fonts: Should text remain editable, be converted to outlines, or use another preparation method?
  • Printable area: What margins and placement limits apply to each key?
  • Fine detail: What minimum strokes, gaps, and text sizes can this process reproduce?
  • Color and images: Which colors and image types are supported, and is a photograph suitable?
  • Backlighting: Which parts of this design will transmit light on the selected product?
  • File handling: Are linked images, layers, or other file elements restricted?

These are questions to resolve with the selected supplier. The documented AI/SVG requirement does not supply universal rules for fonts, resolution, line width, or color matching. Do not transfer MAX’s upload requirements to Tech Toppers’ separate workflow. MAX upload instructions · Tech Toppers order example

Establish artwork rights

MAX’s submitted-content terms require the submitter to own or control the relevant rights and avoid infringement. Those terms do not grant permission to reproduce a particular anime character, company logo, font, or photograph. Establish permission for the intended artwork separately, and keep the relevant license or authorization with your order records. MAX Terms & Conditions

Approve the design and production details together

Prepare one approval package containing the selected product and configuration, completed key manifest, final artwork, and the maker’s answers. Give the artwork a clear version name so both parties can identify the approved file. Check spelling, symbols, orientation, and every key assignment against that version.

Ask whether the maker offers a digital proof, a physical sample, or another approval method. Confirm any charges, revision limits, minimum quantity, and production schedule before relying on them. The evidence supporting this guide does not confirm those services or limits for your order.

For custom shine-through keycaps, request an explanation of how your submitted legends will be treated on the exact backlit product. Ask whether the available proof represents artwork placement only or also demonstrates the intended lighting result. MAX’s documented backlit specification does not establish measured brightness or uniformity on your keyboard. MAX backlit product

For example, if the cart specifies one bottom row while the design file shows another, pause approval and reconcile them. MAX explicitly asks buyers to match the selections and design. Save the corrected configuration and artwork together so the final record is unambiguous. MAX ordering instructions

Check custom-order terms before paying

MAX’s Returns & Refunds page, captured October 15, 2026, classifies custom-printed designs, layouts, and bespoke printing as final sale and ineligible for return or refund. Its general terms also exclude customized keycaps. Obtain order-specific answers about defects, printing errors, and remedies before paying. Returns & Refunds · Terms & Conditions

The captured general terms say custom work cannot be canceled or changed once work has started or been completed. They also describe a 5% fee for canceling an entire order before shipment. Ask how those provisions apply to your order and what event counts as the start of work; being unshipped does not establish that a custom order remains changeable. MAX cancellation terms

The two pages differ on ordinary returns: one starts the 30-day period at delivery, while the other starts it at the invoice date. Their 15% restocking-fee provisions also differ in scope. Both exclude custom keycaps, so neither ordinary-return description should become a promised return window for your personalized order. Dedicated returns policy · General terms

Before approval, get written answers about:

  • Who handles a typo present in the approved artwork versus a printing error.
  • How to report a defect and what remedy, if any, applies.
  • Whether replacement or reprint costs and shipping are covered.
  • When changes stop being possible and what cancellation charges apply.

Check the selected package, total charges, destination eligibility, and applicable terms at checkout. Keep each maker’s policies attached to its own order.

Frequently asked questions

Does custom printed mean shine-through?

Confirm the lighting requirement on the exact product. MAX’s ANSI-104BL_TOP is documented as a backlit set with laser-etched legends. The captured Tech Toppers WASD excerpt documents dye-sublimation printing but does not establish a shine-through result. Ask the selected maker how your artwork will work with backlighting. MAX · Tech Toppers

Can I upload a PNG or JPEG to MAX?

For the documented MAX product, uploaded designs must use MAX’s print template in Illustrator AI or Inkscape SVG format. A PNG or JPEG alone does not meet that stated requirement. Ask whether and how a source image can be incorporated into an acceptable file before preparing the final artwork. MAX upload requirements

Will a Cherry MX listing guarantee fit on my keyboard?

It does not establish the complete fit of your order. The MAX listing’s Cherry MX description leaves board-specific row, width, stabilizer, and clearance questions unresolved. Submit your exact keyboard configuration and per-key manifest to the maker, especially when considering magnetic, optical, or low-profile hardware. MAX product details

Your next step

Send the selected maker your keyboard details, key manifest, and draft artwork in one inquiry. Ask for confirmation of physical coverage, the correct template, the intended print or backlit result, and the terms governing approval. Pay after those answers match the package you intend to order.
